Drain Relining Yorkshire: What It Is, When You Need It & Why a Survey Comes First

Thinking about drain relining in Yorkshire? Find out what it involves, when it's the right fix, and why a CCTV survey must come first.

# Drain Relining Yorkshire: What It Is, When You Need It & Why a Survey Comes First

If you've been told your drains need relining — or you're investigating a persistent problem under your property — drain relining in Yorkshire is one of the most effective repairs available. It restores a damaged pipe from the inside without digging up your garden, driveway or road. But it only works if you know exactly what's wrong first.

That's where a professional CCTV drain survey comes in.

---

What Is Drain Relining?

Drain relining — sometimes called cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining — is a trenchless method of repairing a damaged drain from the inside. A resin-impregnated felt liner is fed into the existing pipe, then inflated and cured (using hot water, steam, or UV light) until it bonds tightly to the inner wall and forms a new, seamless pipe within the old one.

The result: a joint-free, corrosion-resistant lining that restores full flow capacity — without excavation.

This technology has been around since 1971, when it was first developed in London, and has become one of the most widely used pipeline rehabilitation methods worldwide. Pipe diameters as small as 100mm (common in residential drains) right up to large-diameter mains can be lined using this method.

When Does a Drain Need Relining?

Not every drain fault needs relining — and not every damaged drain can be relined. The right solution depends entirely on what's actually wrong. Common reasons drain relining is recommended include:

  • Cracked or fractured pipes — often caused by ground movement, vehicle loading, or age
  • Root ingress — where tree roots have penetrated the pipe through joints or cracks
  • Corroded or deteriorated pipework — especially common in older pitch fibre drains, which deform and collapse over time
  • Misaligned or displaced joints — where sections of pipe have shifted, leaving gaps that allow ground water or root intrusion
  • Persistent leaks causing subsidence or damp
  • Yorkshire's housing stock — much of it Victorian terracing with original clay or pitch fibre drainage — is particularly susceptible to these issues. Ground movement from the region's varied geology (clay-rich soils in the Vale of York, coal measure ground around Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield) accelerates joint failure and cracking.

Why You Must Have a CCTV Survey Before Relining

This is the step that's frequently skipped — and it's the most important one.

Drain relining is only effective when applied to the right type of damage. A liner won't fix a completely collapsed section. It won't work where the pipe has deformed beyond a certain threshold. It can't be installed if the drain hasn't been properly cleaned first.

A CCTV drain survey gives you a full video record of the pipe's condition before any work begins. The camera identifies:

  • The exact location and extent of damage — so you don't pay to reline 10 metres when only 2 are affected
  • Whether relining is viable — or whether excavation and pipe replacement is the only realistic option
  • Root masses or debris that must be cleared before lining can take place
  • The condition of junctions and laterals — which require specialist fittings if they fall within the lining zone

Without this information, you're guessing. And a botched relining job — installed over roots, debris, or unsuitable pipe — will fail quickly and cost far more to rectify.

At Yorkshire Drain Survey, we use best-in-class iTouch CCTV camera systems operated by experienced engineers. We provide a full HD video report and written findings, so you (and any contractor carrying out relining) have everything needed to make the right decision.

How Much Does Drain Relining Cost in Yorkshire?

Drain relining costs vary depending on the diameter of the pipe, the length to be lined, the access conditions, and the extent of preparation work required (jetting, root cutting, etc.).

We always recommend getting a CCTV drain survey first — it produces the detailed findings that any reputable relining contractor will want before quoting. Our surveys come with clear upfront pricing before any work begins. To find out what's involved for your property, call 0113 734 2245 and we'll talk it through.

Can I Get a Survey and Relining Done Together?

Yes. Many customers contact us after a survey has identified relining as the recommended repair. We can refer you to trusted relining contractors across Yorkshire, or if you'd like us to arrange the full package — survey, clean, reline, and post-lining verification survey — we can discuss that too.

The post-lining verification survey matters. It's a second camera inspection carried out after relining is complete, confirming the liner has cured correctly, junctions are clear, and flow is restored. Without it, you're taking the contractor's word for it.

Is Drain Relining Covered by Home Insurance?

Sometimes — but it depends on the cause of damage and your specific policy. Sudden damage (such as a pipe fractured by ground movement from a third party) is more likely to be covered than gradual deterioration.
